Overview
Welcome to Alaska! Located in one of the most exotic and magical remote bays off the Western Coast of Prince of Wales Island, you will find Sea Otter Sound Lodge. Recognized by national magazines as ‘the most comfortable and well run lodge you will ever visit’, and ‘the best fly-in fishing lodge for the price that you can find’.
Many years ago, Tim and Murtie Comer bought a six-man floating fish camp. The driving force behind the decision was the loyal customer following, the incredible fishing, awesome views and magical remote location. This was a place where a true fisherman and his fishing buddy could use a lodge boat and fish on his own within the protected salt waters of Sea Otter Sound, just off the Gulf of Alaska. Tim and Murtie saw the potential and went to work. They added customized 18’ and 19’ JetCrafts with forward helms, half canvas, advanced electronics powered by the awesome 60 HP Mercury Bigfoot. Now that they had the best boats in the business, they went to work on outfitting them with the best tackle... $200 Lamiglas fishing rods, Shimano trolling reels, McCoy tournament line, Gamakatsu hooks, Scotty rod holders. Their philosophy through all of this was not only the every year fisherman that comes to Alaska, but that one person who dreamed and saved for his once in a lifetime fishing trip to Alaska. Tim and Murtie wanted to give that one person, glorious memories to last a lifetime. That philosophy has worked many times over.
Tim and Murtie added all new luxurious cabins to accommodate the growing demand. Beautiful local cedar was used as were local craftsmen. Lodge-pole beds and dressers added to the Alaskan lodge atmosphere. Each room was themed with Alaskan wildlife... the Eagle Room, the Wolf Room, etc. The lodge now accommodates 16 guests. The lodge house great room and dining facilities also highlight the love that Tim and Murtie have for Alaska and its natural beauty and wildlife. Guests can relax in leather recliners as they watch the humpback whales blowing and breaching in the sound. Eagles, Sea Otters, Land Otters, Harbor Seals add to the magic and wonder of Sea Otter Sound Lodge.
Tim and Murtie added an ocean going Skagit Orca for the guests that wanted to go out in the Gulf with a Coast Guard licensed guide for the ‘big barn door’ halibut. The lodge takes no more than four fishermen at a time on the ‘Murtie C’. The lodge record to date is a 300-pound halibut caught by Tom Dost of Oakland. The self guided boats have brought in their share of ‘barn door’ halibut. Mike Sadler of Brentwood, CA brought in a 266 pounder in one of the self guided boats!
Tim and Murtie knew that even for the most advanced saltwater fisherman, embarking on a self-guided fishing trip to Alaska for the first time can be daunting. So they put together an all inclusive package that would take the worry and stress out of a great fishing vacation. The guest just needed to get to Ketchikan on Alaskan Air, and then Sea Otter Sound Lodge would take over. The guests are put up for their first night at one of Ketchikan’s premier waterfront hotels. The following morning, the float planes arrive to fly the guests 100 miles west, and land at the lodge. Once rooms are assigned, Tim and Murtie and the staff hold an orientation for all the guests, old and new, to let them know what areas in the sound the salmon are biting and what they are biting on. Once the fishing talk is completed, safety issues are discussed and questions answered. The fisherman and his or her fishing buddy are assigned boats. This boat will be yours for the length of your stay. If this is your first time, you will be escorted all day by one of the staff. But before you leave the dock, your staff member for the day will orient you on the boat, the safety gear then assist you in tying up your gear.
