OverviewDavid Payne Outdoors, LLC is located in Helena, Montana, and was created in 1995 for the purpose of providing professional guide service and custom fly fishing instruction on Montana’s blue-ribbon Missouri River. The business focuses solely on guided fly fishing and in-depth, detail-oriented fly fishing instruction that is suitable for anglers of all levels from beginner to expert.
Instruction is available on all aspects and methods of fly fishing as they relate to the Missouri River and similar fisheries in the Rocky Mountain west. Areas covered included rod, tackle and gear selection, fly selection and basic entomology, riseform identification, fishing strategies for nymph, dry fly, and streamer fishing, drift and wade fishing strategies. The level of instruction is totally optional and can be customized to fit any angler, situation or taste.
The Missouri River has developed into one the finest trout fisheries in the western United States and attracts anglers from all over the world - primarily for its dry fly fishing opportunities. The primary area of focus for the fly fisher is the 35-mile section of river from Holter Dam to the town of Cascade. The river is fishable year round, however the majority of anglers are drawn to the river and its phenomenal insect hatches that occur between the months of June and October.
The day-float trip typically begins with breakfast in the small fishing village of Craig, MT, which is located approximately 40 miles north of Helena, MT, right on the Missouri River. Craig is the home three high quality fly shops, a couple of fine bars and restaurants, a bunch of drift boats, and a cool old fishing dog that will retrieve your sun glasses from the bottom of the river.
The goals for the day fishing-wise are discussed over a plate of steaming hotcakes or the like; the choice of float (river section) is made, the vehicle shuttle is set up, and off you go. In terms of river miles, section floats can be as short as 1½ miles long and up to 13 miles or longer. The typical fishing day is eight to ten hours on the water. Lodging options in the area vary from small cabins suitable for single or double occupancy to large luxurious full service lodges capable to serving groups of ten or larger. Assistance regarding lodging availability, recommendations, and getting you there is happily provided at no charge. | ||
