Jake Hood, Manager/Guide, Rods n' Reels Out West I began fly-fishing in the mid-1980s after taking a fly tying course as a way to pass the winter doldrums here in our snowy inland northwest. I caught and released my first cutthroat trout on the beautiful St. Joe River. My second date with my wife was to fly-fish for cutts on the headwaters to the Coeur d’ Alene River, and thousands of hours before and since have been spent doing even more fishing and guiding. Fly-fishing has been my passion for twenty years now and I’ve fished and guided throughout the inland northwest and Alaska’s Katmai National Park.
I was born and raised in Spokane, Washington and I continue to live there with my bride, Linda. I have worked in the professional fly-fishing industry since 1989 as a retail manager and guide manager in Idaho, Montana and Washington. I was first licensed to guide the St. Joe in 1993 and have logged countless hours on this gem since. I am, by all accounts, a fanatical fly-fisherman that spends as many hours as possible fishing when I’m not on the water guiding. I have no particular favorite genre of fly-fishing but, as luck would have it, I do like to row the boat nearly as much as I like to fish.
I am passionate about the waters that I guide and fish on and feel deeply about sharing those waters with our guests. Guiding for me is about creating the relationship with the river that I have come to enjoy for each of my guests. This can sometimes be a challenge in such brief encounters but it is always my goal. Thoreau said, “ The mass of men live their entire lives in quiet desperation”.
I believe the cure for desperation is fly-fishing.
Thoreau also said, “ He who travels confidently in the direction of his dreams and endeavors to live the life he has imagined, will enjoy a success unexpected in common hours.”
All I know is that I love to fish!
