Fishing South Fork Flathead

You will horseback to the base camp at Salmon Forks right on the bank of the South Fork in the Bob, a spectacular ride through some prestine country. Fish the South Fork of the Flathead, born in the nation's most beautiful wilderness - “The Bob Marshall is best known for its pure wild native Westslope Cutthroat Trout”, “This river has never seen a hatchery raised fish.” The river is all native wild Westslope Cutthroat with the average size 14-18 inches and a few up to 22 inches. The Cutthroat feed mostly on insects and love to rise to dry flies. The access to the river is unlimited; most fishermen walk out from camp and fish within two miles of camp. Sometimes Salmon Forks Outfitters/Montana will take you up river by horseback and you can spend the day fishing back to camp.

Some guests never go farther than 30 minutes from camp and catch 20 to 30+ feisty, thick bodied 14 to 20 inch cutts daily. Prime time to fish these waters is August through September. One guest, John P., who had floated the river three times, said "we floated right past the best fishing spots on the South Fork, now I can fish them all the time, and come back to a great meal and a comfortable place to sleep."

Very seldom will you see other fishermen on the river, except those that are in camp with you. Big Salmon Lake is located just 1-1/2 miles from camp. Guests can spend a day fishing at the head of the lake where it is not uncommon to catch cutthroat in the 18 to 20 inch range. In September the "Bull Trout" gather at the head of the lake to spawn. They are huge! Salmon Forks Outfitters/Montana also fishes a tributary of the Southfork called White River.

If you are looking to get away from the crowds, see some beautiful prestine country, spend some times in the Mountains, with the best Cutthroat fishing in the country, then this is it! Join Salmon Forks Outfitters for your Montana Fishing Adventure. Mark and Janis will personally be your hosts on this trip.

Trip Itinerary

Days 1-7: Wilderness Fishing
Arrive in Kalispell, MT (via Delta or Northwest arrive on Friday or early Saturday afternoon). (Please plan to make your own airfare plans as ticket prices can fluctuate throughout the year.)

Salmon Forks Outfitters will meet you on Saturday and take you to the Diamond R Lodge, where you will stay your first night. After your gear is dropped off, drive about 60 miles to the lodge, where you will spend a restful afternoon. You will get a great meal before settling in for the evening in small, but clean cabins.

On Sunday you will rise early, have a full breakfast and drive the 10 or 12 miles to the trailhead. There you will be assigned your horse for the week, and if all goes well, be on the trail by 8:30am. The trail ride is approximately 7.5 hours to the Salmon Forks campsite on the Southfork of the Flathead River. There is no getting around it, riding a horse for 7.5 hours is a pain, but if you want to visit beautiful country, and get away from people and civilization, this is the trip for you.

You’ll arrive in camp about 4:00pm. You can take a river bath, fish, have a beer, or just relax as Janis and Mark prepare dinner. It’s usually steaks with all the fixin’s.

On Monday thru Friday, there is no schedule. You can fish, read a book, sleep, hike, or horseback ride. The purpose of this week is to lose yourself in the beauty of the wilderness, and catch a lot of fish, which you will do.

On Saturday morning, Salmon Forks Outfitters will pack up and make the 7.5-hour ride back to the trailhead. You’ll then be transported back to a motel, have dinner and get some sleep.

On Sunday you can catch a flight out of Kalispell.
